I released version 1.1 of my PHP MVC framework, Helium, today. This version includes some minor bug fixes, as well as a few feature additions involving extensions (which you can now register for automatic deployment at the framework's website) and user management (including examples built into the default installation). I also removed the need for a settings file, reverting to system defaults when missing. If you use the framework, I welcome your feedback (and bug reports)!

I am today releasing the official version 1.0 of my web framework, Helium. It is available on GitHub, Google Code, and on SourceForge (as well as through the framework's website) and has modest documentation. In the next few weeks, I plan to vastly expand the documentation and will update accordingly. If anyone should use my framework, please let me know your thoughts and criticism!

I have recently discovered the glory that is iTunes U. Coupled with the recent acquisition of a vehicle that has an iPod connection and an ongoing 120 mile daily journey to and from work, I now occupy my mornings and evenings with the sonorous sounds of academic lectures and podcasts, a thoroughly enjoyable treat from the internet age. Most recently, I have been enthralled by the recordings of Anthony Heideman, a history professor at FRCC, as he educates about Western Civilization. I highly recommend it; exceptional and relatable oration! On a related note, I must also mention the Khan Academy, a massive collection of educational videos. Frankly, if you're not using the internet to expand your mind, then you're squandering the greatest advancement in learning since the invention of the book...

So, I wrote a programming framework. It is certainly not something publication worthy, as I did not derive a new architectural pattern to compete with MVC (in fact, the framework follows the MVC pattern). But I did write it and figured it was nice enough to throw up on GitHub, Google Code, and SourceForge and let people toy around with it. It is designed to be very lean and easy to install. It comes coupled with installations scripts that will do most of the work for you.Once installed, the framework is designed to be very painless...

As technology tends to be today, it is not unusual for really impressive inventions and reinventions to just whiz by my screen, unnoticed by a set of eyes that read far too many blogs, news sites and forums in a desperate effort to stay hip and with it and employable. But this particular little tidbit of tech news caught my attention and I think I am officially, and this is no small compliment, impressed. CNN reports on a device called lightRadio, a very tiny cube that...

CNN Money has released an article outlining the difficulty in obtaining genuine technology talent, as a growing economy continues to bring about an explosion of new tech start-ups in typical hot spots, like Silicon Valley and New York. In the article, Daniel Gruneberg is quoted as saying, "there are a lot of ideas, but to actually do it you need someone to build it." The article purports that a talent "war" has begun as quality engineers and developers continue to be scarce."There is definitel...

Upsetting computer scientists the world over, a man from HP labs has released a proof the P != NP. The news was broken on Greg and Kat's Blog and a link to the published paper in PDF form was later released. To re-post the text of an e-mail sent by Vinay Deolalikar...

No, I'm not referring here to the potential iPhone 4 problem (the one not related to reception issues). What I am referring to is the Motorola Droid X, which apparently destroys itself if you try to modify it. Despite the operating system, Android, being a Google created triumph...

I came upon a dilemma today. In my current environment, I have nearly eight servers serving content through a single internet connection. Up until today I had no conflicting ports, making the firewall rules fairly straightforward. However, the company has decided to bring a couple new web servers in-house, which meant I needed to configure a reverse proxy on the gateway machine to handle the conflicting port needs...

According to multiple sources, Valve, the creator of the wildly popular Half-Life game franchise (and my personal favorite for an immersive first-person shooting experience) has officially announced their intention to release a Linux version of it's distribution system, Steam. With the Mac version of their software already released...
